Wouldn't this make a cool background for a portrait?

Sometimes just goofing around and having fun can create interesting results. These photos were taken out of shear boredom. With only some light sources around I set the point and shoot I had with me to a long exposure and then swung the camera around by it’s camera strap. Try it sometime and you will find that depending on how you spin the camera or swing it around you can get some cool abstract and geometric patterns from literally nothing but the light sources around you.  The light source here was a strip of open window between curtains on an overcast day. A tungsten white balance setting enhances the cool overcast into a nice deep blue.

Light takes the shape of water ripples.

  1. Are you serious? These are basically random photos? They patterns are very interesting. I really like these.

  2. Yep, just twirl and spin the camera on a strap or with your arms. Strap is more random. So simple it’s silly huh?

  3. I like the images you posted. Nice. The skill of knowing which image to select among others, especially during experimental shooting, is at times just as important as the shooting itself. Having taste, style, a look for design, composition, colours, shapes contributes to the creative process as much as creation. This reminds me of phase I went through photographing paint cans and fooling around with lights tails here and there. I liked the pictures that came out but what to do with them? I didn’t have the heart to erase them so I put them in a folder called artistic crazy stuff! You are making me want to get those images out again and post them in a gallery.

  4. Hi Andrea. A lot of photos like this sell as backgrounds for internet and computer use. But beyond many can make great backgrounds for image montages and more. And combined together in frames on a wall they can make great diptych or triptychs for modern design spaces!

Thanks for the great comment and question. I’ll make sure to check out your website in more detail (after I dig out from the snow storm we are having!). On the surface it looks great. Love the front page layout!

This is so impressive. I have heard all kinds of techniques, but this one is a first! What a result. I’m a real fan of a) abstracts b) images with a few tones. Major score on both counts. Such great work, you are great Dan. Thanks for sharing.

Dan, this is so cool. I can’t believe it’s so simple to make such a neat abstract. I’ll have to give it a whirl sometime!
